Dynamics (Volume)

Explain...

  1. That we use dynamics when talking about how loud or quiet a song is
    1. Ask kids if they can name a quiet or loud song
  2. The names of the different dynamics used in music are usually in Italian
  3. Explain each dynamic (its name, its symbol, the level of volume it represents, and demonstrate it by clapping/humming/playing the maraca)
    1. Piano (p) - soft/quiet
    2. Mezzo piano (mp) - mezzo means medium, so mezzo piano is moderately soft/quiet
    3. Mezzo forte (mf) - moderately strong/loud
    4. Forte (f) - strong/loud
  4. Explain crescendo and decrescendo (use the picture below) and demonstrate it by clapping/humming/playing the maraca
    1. Show them how the picture for the crescendo gets bigger so you get louder; show how the shape matches the volume bar
    2. Show them how the picture for the decrescendo gets small so you get quieter

For the kids...

The following can be found by clicking the button below.

The page below can be used for step 3, described above, to show the kids the symbols for the dynamics.

Flashcards: Each row is one flashcard. Either show the symbol and dynamic and ask what it means or show the volume and ask which dynamic it matches. Then, have them clap/hum/play at that dynamic.
